AZ Storm 13 Lightning
January 14-15, 2012 Az Sky Kickoff Tournament
Grab your umbrellas, folks, it's about to get real stormy right now!
Day one of the AZ sky kickoff tournament was a success! We started off
playing Aspire and defeated them 25-23 and 25-20. It was an
all-around team effort and the girls played great together! Our second
match of the day we played the number one seeded team of the tournament,
Saguaros and also defeated them 25-20 and 25-21. It was great seeing our
13-Lightning team fight and earn this win! Our final game was a nail
biter and was played against White Tanks. The match was very close and
went to three games and defeated the White Tanks! Overall everyone on
the team played with heart and desire! Day 2 of the tournament was
intense, where we went to three games against Club Red 14-Amanda and
defeated them (20-25, 26-24, 15-13)! Our second match (semifinals) was a
heart breaker and was played against sky. Meghan Lawless and Courtney
Bush had great serves throughout the tournament and pulled us ahead many
times. Great net play by Chenay Gladstone, Meghan Lawless and Courtney
Bush. Chenay Gladstone had awesome defense front and back row and gave
everything she had to push us to victory.
We can't wait for our upcoming region tournaments to see us stir up a
storm! |

13 Thunder
This weekend the 13 Thunder girls played in the AZ
Kick-off tournament and did a great job adjusting to a brand new
team and showing Arizona what we are made of. There are many girls on
the team that are playing new positions and each girl is working so hard
to improve on her skills. We showed some incredible promise for an
awesome season beating some good teams. We also got to play the 14
Monsoon team on the last day and had a fun match, WAY TO GO STORM! This
weekend we will play in our first AZ Region tournament and we can’t wait
to play and beat some more teams! |

AZ STORM 14 Lightning
What a
fantastic weekend for Storm 14 Lightning. The team earned a Bronze
title in our first tournament of the season. This group is very
promising and we expect them to continue to perform at a high level.
Not only are they growing as players in skill, but as a team, there is
great deal of positive chemistry. As we entered pool play, nervous
first match energy was clear but we got into our groove and took care of
business versus Sky 14R1. The second match versus Clash 14s was a solid
win in two games. Impressive hitting and net play in set one set the
tone of the match and carried us to a 25-16, 25-13 victory. The last
match of pool play was against ZIA 14-1s. The break between matches
gave a sloppy start but consistent play from Libby Fleury helped us in a
great come from behind victory in set one (26-24). In set two we hit
our stride and put Zia out of system to give us a 25-11 win! Heading
into tournament play on day two rested and confident, we were ready for
our match against East Valley Juniors 14-Navy. A solid competitor, East
Valley challenged us to play better defense and serve consistently.
After winning 25-20, we may have suffered from a bit of overconfidence.
Early service errors made us nervous in the game but again defense
sparked the team to battle. Kami Harrion covered the court amazingly
and helped the team build some energy to close out the match 25-22.
Moving into the 3rd place match, we knew this would be our toughest
competition all weekend. A talented and athletic Sky 14N2 team gave us
coaches plenty to think about. The girls came out a little under
confident in the first set but the girls made a better showing proving
that they had some competitive spirit. The girls became more
aggressive, had great hustle plays and the middles became a big part of
our success against Sky. While we lost in two, the girls battled hard
and made us proud of their accomplishments throughout the weekend. |

14 Thunder made a huge impact in Fiesta
Classic 16 Club!
I am so proud of our 14 Thunder team in their first
tournament of the season! They upset multiple 16 and under teams in the
Fiesta Classic 16 Club division. The girls went into day 3 undefeated
and in the gold division as the team to beat. The girls finished as the
#1 14 & under team and tied for 5th overall. Excellent job ladies!

Fiesta 15 Lightening wrap-up:
The girls came out abit off their game and fell short
the opening match. Once the second match came, 12 players came together
and let us know what we may be in store for this season. Playing hard
for the next two matches and teasing us with amazing hustle and outright
inspiring play. We ended the first round 1 - 2, a total of 11
points could have changed that to 3-0. Day 2 came and the learning curve
continued to grow as we went 3-0 and moved forward as the #1 seed on the
final day. We came out strong on day 3 and powered past the Dinamo 16’s
team that dealt us our first lose last year at Cactus, revenge is sweet
when served with a powerful attack and total denial at the net. We came
out blazing and took the first set against an NA Juniors 16’s, but,
maybe looked too far ahead and lost sets 2 and 3. An exciting weekend to
be sure, and a very promising start to a season with high expectations.

15L Team
I am really surprised by how well our team did this weekend. We all
contributed to every point made. We all learned how to work as a team
and we all had a lot of fun. One area that I see needing the most work
is just doing the little things right every time. It’s consistency. I am
excited to see how we all improve over the season and become good
friends. I really like how we are a scrappy team and do not give up
after one mistake. Everyone was part of the puzzle this weekend.
Co-Captain Sydney Miller #24
This weekend was so much fun, not only in playing volleyball but also in
getting closer to my teammates. I think we were a little nervous about
our first tournament in the beginning, but I think we got the hang of
actually playing in game situations as a team by the second day. As we
played more our excitement went up and I think that makes a huge
difference in the way a team plays, and it is fun to see how it affects
everyone else as well. Even though we still have some stuff to work on I
had a blast at the tournament and I now know what PIECE OF THE PUZZLE I
am:) I am super proud of my team and I am so glad I am a part of it,
with the amazing girls and dedication to this sport I think our team
will be a great one!

15 Thunder
Our first day of Fiesta, 15-Thunder was in a pool with the #1 seated
team as well as a two other 16's teams. We took the #1 Golden West
to three games, but ended up losing 13-15. Although a setback, the girls
pushed through and ended up winning two out of the three games on the
second day. The third day brought more wins and even more excitement.
After winning the first two matches, we went into the final match of the
day. The girls played great the first game with stellar defense and
serving. The second game was slightly a different story. We were
losing 23-12, but this team had some more fight in them. Brooke Rhodes
went on a serving run and ended up evening out the score! After several
point exchanges, our middle went up and destroyed the ball to end the
game. As always, the girls learned the hard lesson of the first day's
importance, but fought hard all the way through the third day never the
less. Good job to everyone and looking forward to Open #2 and Denver! |

16 Thunder Finished 3rd in the Fiesta
Classic 16 Open division!
Excellent tournament showing for our 16 Thunder team! Of course everyone
wants to finish on the top, but considering the dynamics of our team and
players playing where needed, we were able to upset a lot of great
teams. Storm only lost to Spiral 16 Black and AZU 16 in the semifinals
over the 3 day tournament schedule. Every match was well fought and
every player contributed where and when needed. The team only wants
better from this point on! |

17-Thunder Team Competes in Fiesta Classic
The 17-Thunder team continues to make improvements as the season
progresses. The Fiesta Classic proved that our girls can compete with
any team. We played some tough 18s teams this weekend, and pulled out
some great wins against Shenu 18s, Aspire 18s, and a solid California
team. We played some scrappy defense and learned to be more aggressive
at the net. Paige Thomas came through as a threat in the front row, both
offensively and defensively in our second day of pool play. Our setters
are improving tremendously, and becoming both offensive and defensive
threats. Mackenzie Field showed some dynamic setting skills, and Nicki
Cohen did the same. We are excited to quickly be back in the gym to
progress as athletes and work toward winning our next open tournament.
We did some great work this weekend ladies! Good job! |

1Fiesta Classic 18 Thunder
As a new coach in the area and to this club, I am extremely pleased with
the girls I have on this team. We are fortunate to have a talented
bunch, and have the potential to achieve some great things this season.
On the first day of competition, we won our pool in somewhat of a
moderately competitive fashion. Things heated up after a win on
Sunday morning, and we had 4 wins under our belt until we dropped a
heart-breaker in 3 that left us unable to recover. We dropped the
subsequent match to a very solid T-Street team in a quick 2 sets. Our
goals then shifted to finishing 9th, the best finish we could hope to
grab on Monday. We began the morning by winning another close 3 game
match, and then met up with Spiral, with whom another battle was fought.
We had a few injuries and seemed like we ran out of steam, losing in 3,
15-10, unable to reach the finals of the silver bracket. Everyone was
able to get a taste of the action and help this team take a respectable
11th place finish. Sydnee Arson (Setter, Captain) kept this team well
fed with an array of tasty sets, dishing to our big bombers like Trianna
Henry (OH, Captian), Kaja Sandberg (MB), Ellie Ladensack (OH), and
Maggie Niu (MB). Elle Pavelonis (Libero/DS), Logan Rae (OH/OPP), and
Morgan Carman (Libero/DS) led the way defensively and kept us in rythym
in serve recieve. We also got contributions from Connnor Malone (MB),
putting up a solid right side block, Erica Goldtooth (MB), and Stephanie
Solheim (OPP/OH/MB). If we cut down on our unforced errors then we have
a chance to make a little magic for Storm. With a continued effort on
conditioning and focused practices, I expect nothing less than a team
who is constantly getting better and better, so watch out for the
BOOM!!! Proud of my girls, and a special thanks to Ashley Hull (DS/Libero)
for a great attitude while anxiously awaiting her return from injury.
Let’s not forget about SJ, my fiery little co-coach, who is the glue
that holds this crazy bunch together. Until next time... |

12T Coach Shannon:
Way to KICK OFF our season!!! Every player did a
good job and we are extremely proud of each player! We almost have
rotations down, and we did a great job of getting our pass, set,
hits!! It is coming together, and will just keep getting better and
better!
We chose 4 awards to give out for this tournament. Channing received
the Lightning Strike award for her aggressive play at the net! She
had several kills and did an awesome job serving as well! Mykenna
received the Stormin' Performance for her solid play in all areas.
She also was very loud and showed a lot of leadership! We gave the
Chk...Chk...BOOM award to Peighton for her great spirit and support
for her team throughout the tournament! It is vital for a team to
have positive attitudes! Great example to start us off on. We chose
Aneliesa for the Coach's Pick award for doing a great job setting
this weekend. We look forward to her learning the position more and
more, and just getting better each time she steps on the court!
Again, great job everybody! Lets work hard for the next 2 weeks, and
bring it a little more for our next tournament! C
Our 2 captains wrote:
"Our
1st tournament was actually very successful considering how many
practices we've had! Everybody was working hard and hustling. We
were all participating on the bench and I was proud of everyone. We
all made mistakes, but all of the others kept up their spirits. I
saw everyone being energetic and helpful. I'm glad everyone got a
chance to play because that is why we won the ones that we did. Our
team showed and gave all that they had!" Halle
"At our first tournament I think we played very well. We hustled a
lot an we were all focused. On the first day, we were all ready to
play and we were all around the court. On our second day, we played
awesome. We took 11th place in that tournament! Yay! We really
improved over the break. We are going to have a good year!!!"

17 Thunder, from assistant coach
Kristen Preach's mouth:
The 17-Thunder team made
some great strides this weekend. I am happy to say that each player
improved individually on the court and improved in their overall
skill and technique. The entire team improved with each match that
was played. We played some good teams. We came close with Aspire
18's, EVJ 18's, and Spiral 18-Blue. We pulled out
two great wins against AZVC 17's and AZ Sky 17's. We are looking
forward to the Fiesta Classic and our next Open Tournament as the
top seed in our division! |

|

16 Thunder, according to head
coach, Terri Spann:
For our first Regional Tournament, 16
Thunder was excited to drive all the way out to Barney Sports Complex
and smell the sweet smell of cattle! While Both Stacie Dewitt and I
worked on optional line-ups, we struggled a little vs. a phenomenal
Aspire 15's team. Able to pull off the win in game 3, it was smooth
sailing from that point on as we defeated Phoenix 18s VBC, EVJ 16 Mizuno
and AZ Sky 15 Booya. All tough matches and every point helped our
team get better mentally, physically and emotionally. Ironically, both
Storm 16s and 15s were in the same division. While 16s were
successfully competing against their competition, our 15s were doing the
same under Head Coach Matt Rogers and assistant coach Jenny Teslevich.
After Storm 15s defeated the same Aspire 15s team we struggled against
earlier that morning in a nail biter match during the semi's, the finals
were set. Both Storm 15's and 16's would be battling it out in the
finals! It was an awesome set up for both Storm teams to be in the
finals. Someone had to win and fortunately it was 16's! Storm 16's were
led by Mia Tielborg's powerful arm swing, Dani Westfall's consistent
play and Alexis Patterson's setting. This was Alexis's first time
setting and she stepped up huge for us! Jesse Hover's serving could not
be matched in game 2 as she was on a hot streak as well! Both teams
fought a great match and Storm represented very well. |

16 Lightening, in assistant coach
Lisa Ramirez's words:
For our first tournament, Coach April and
myself were very pleased with the all around team performance
throughout the whole day. The girls picked up their communicating
skills TREMENDOUSLY, but there's always room for improvement, right?
After a long day of running a 5-1 for the first time in a long time,
during our last match of the day, Kahri Harrion unfortunately got
sick and had to run off the court in the middle of the game and was
taken out. We were struggling when Kahri was out but still fought
hard. Even though Kahri could have easily sat out the rest of the
game, she asked to be subbed back in to help her teammates back to a
victory! The official of that game was admired by Kahri's
selflessness and courage to get back in the game. Aside from that,
we got more and more comfortable as the day went on with running 3's
51's and stack plays. As a coach it was really awesome to see the
confidence these girls showed on the court. We had a few sweet
crucial blocks which helped us out mentally and gave ur team a
little Swag! Helped enough to finish over .500 which is pretty sweet
for our first regional competition. These girls are becoming great
team and come to practice hungry for more. As a coach, you can only
be proud and hope they continue on this path! |

|

15T In Jenny Teslevich's words:
Our first open this tournament was an amazing
success and a lot of fun to watch and coach. The girls defeated a
few key teams such as Aspire 15's and 16's as well as AZ Sky 15's.
They battled their way through the tournament with relentless,
scrappy defense, consistent passing, and worked well as a team. Each
player, whether they started or cheered along side, played a crucial
role in the team's success and movement up a division. We have lots
to work on this week in practice and will implement these
improvements in our play this weekend during Fiesta in the 16's Open
division. Thanks to all the parents and girls for a successful first
tournament! |
